Quick answer
Open the Everything Is Cake template, choose Solo for yourself or Pet for a cat or dog, add one clear photo with the face easy to see, and press Make me cake. You get an 8-second vertical video with sound: a realistic kitchen shot, a knife slices in, and the cut opens to layers of sponge and frosting.
The is-it-cake videos work on one surprise: a knife cuts into something that looks real, and it’s dessert. The Everything Is Cake template makes the thing that looks real you, or your pet, from one photo.
It’s playful and clean: no gore, just a very convincing cake that happens to be built from your photo. This guide covers which photo to use, how to make it, and how to post it so the reveal lands.
What you need
- One photo of you, or of your cat or dog, with the face easy to see
- JPG, PNG or WEBP, up to 10 MB and at least 512 pixels on each side
- A Reelfie account and 80 credits; the smallest pack is up to 2 videos for $9.90
It takes one subject: a person or a pet, not a group. If it’s a friend, they have to be 18 or older and happy for you to use their photo.
Step 1 · Pick the photo
The clip starts as an ordinary shot of you, so the more it looks like you, the bigger the surprise when the knife goes in. A front-on photo with your upper body in frame, in soft, even light, gives the template the most to work with.
- Face toward the camera, not hidden by hands, hair or sunglasses
- Upper body in frame, not only a tight face crop
- Soft, even light. Very dark shots make the cake look murky
- For a pet: the face toward the camera, eyes visible, the whole head in shot
A dog or cat that turns out to be cake is hard to scroll past. If your pet won’t look at the camera, hold a treat just above the lens and take a burst of photos.
Step 2 · Make it on Reelfie
- 1Open Everything Is Cake.
- 2Choose Solo for yourself, or Pet for a cat or dog.
- 3Add your photo. An 8-second 720p video costs 80 credits; the price is on the button before it runs.
- 4Press Make me cake. The price is on the button before you start.
You can close the page while it works. The video lands in Assets, and if it fails, the credits come back automatically. Videos made with free credits carry a small watermark.
Step 3 · Caption and posting ideas
The clip is 9:16 with sound, made for TikTok and Shorts and right for Reels and Stories too. Don’t give the reveal away in the first line of the caption: let the slice speak for itself.

Turns out I was cake all along. #isitcake
Before you post, see How to post an AI video to TikTok without losing quality. It keeps the frosting looking sharp.
Doing it without AI
The original trend is real baking: cakes sculpted to look like a shoe, a handbag or a pot plant, then sliced on camera. That takes serious cake-decorating skill and a long day. A cake that looks like a person is out of reach for most home bakers.
The simple version is a cut. Film yourself looking at the camera with the phone on a stand, then film a knife slicing a layer cake in the same spot and light. Put the two shots back to back and cut on the beat. It reads as a joke rather than a reveal, which is where the template comes in.
Common problems
It doesn’t look like you before the slice
Use a sharper, front-on photo with your face uncovered, in soft light. Crop out other people.
Your pet’s face came out odd
Choose Pet, not Solo, and use a photo where the face points at the camera with both eyes visible.
The photo was turned down
Check it’s a JPG, PNG or WEBP under 10 MB and at least 512 pixels on each side. Here is why photos get blocked.
There’s a watermark
Videos made with free credits carry a small one. Videos made with credits from a pack don’t.
FAQ
Is it gory?
No. The slice reveals sponge and frosting, nothing else. It’s set in a clean kitchen and kept playful.
Can I pick the cake flavor?
No. Every clip opens to layered sponge with frosting. The outside is what changes, because it’s built from your photo.
Does it work on things that aren’t people?
It’s made for a person or a pet. Choose Solo for yourself or Pet for a cat or dog, and use a photo where the face is clear.
How much does it cost?
An 8-second video is 80 credits. The smallest pack is up to 2 videos for $9.90. If a video fails, the credits come back automatically.
