Quick answer

Open Gas Station Dance, add a full-body photo of you, or one each for two of you, and press make. You get an 8-second clip with sound of you dancing with big, confident moves on an unbranded forecourt at night, under a buzzing fluorescent canopy with the wet ground throwing back the light. It costs 80 credits.

The original is a holiday clip. In the summer of 2024, a group of friends on a long road trip stopped at a motorway service station, an Autogrill according to the Italian press, and one of them danced on the forecourt to “Stay With Me”, a 2009 Eurodance track by the Romanian group Akcent, while another filmed. It sat on Instagram until 2026, when AI remakes started swapping celebrities and then everyone else into the dancer’s place.

It works for the same reason it worked the first time. A service station is the least glamorous place on a trip, and someone dancing there like it’s a festival stage is the whole joke.

Three shots for a longer post

  1. 1One person dances alone on the forecourt, completely committed.
  2. 2The camera swings round to the friend filming, grinning at the lens.
  3. 3Someone else climbs out of the car to join in.

AI remakes are usually just the first shot with a new face. The other two are easy to film yourself, and they make the post read as yours rather than a swap.

What ours looks like

Ours is a scene of its own, not the service station in the original clip. It’s after dark, under a fluorescent canopy, on a forecourt still wet from rain, with no logos or readable signs, so no real company ends up in your video. The night light is harsh and flattering at once: it makes every move stand out against the black.

Solo

One photo, the whole forecourt to yourself.

Pair

Two photos, two dancers side by side.

The road-trip friend who always starts it

Clothes with some movement, a hoodie, a loose shirt, wide trousers, read better under the canopy light than tight dark layers, which disappear into the night.

Step by step

  1. 1Open the Gas Station Dance page. Add one photo to dance alone, or a photo of each of you to dance as a pair.
  2. 2Pick photos where each person is standing, head to toe, in the outfit they’d wear on a road trip. A second person must be happy to be in it.
  3. 3Vertical is the default; square and widescreen are there too. The button shows the cost before anything runs: 80 credits for an 8-second clip with sound, about $4.95.
  4. 4Press make. A clip takes a few minutes, and a failed run gives the credits back.
  5. 5Download the MP4 from Assets and post it on TikTok or Reels, picking the trend sound in the app and turning the clip’s own audio down.

Cutting the post

  • Lead with a real clip from your trip: the car, the motorway, the snack haul. Then cut to the AI dance.
  • Put the trend sound on in TikTok or Reels so the clip shows up with the others using it.
  • If you made a pair version, tag the other person, and only post it once they’ve seen it.
  • For the free route with no AI at all, our guide to filming it yourself covers where and how to do it without annoying anyone.

Common problems

  • Our two faces got mixed up

Use photos taken in similar light, each of only one person, and make sure the two people look clearly different in them.

  • My feet and legs look wrong

The photo stopped at the knees. Use a head-to-toe shot so the legs aren’t guessed.

  • I wanted a daytime service station

This one is always at night. A daytime look is easier to film for real.

  • Can I put a brand on the station?

No. It stays unbranded on purpose, so no real company or logo appears in the clip.
